Novel Tarot: One Door from Disaster (Chapter 7)

Knight of Cauldrons - Celtic Tarot Deck

I love beautiful tarot and oracle cards, so for each chapter of each novel I write, I draw a card from one of my decks and read it intuitively. See the bottom of the page for information about the novel.

For the previous chapter, we looked at Charlie and his relationship with Lilah from her point of view.  For this chapter, I’ve drawn another card from the same Celtic Tarot deck, this time a Knight of Cauldrons, which is more commonly called the Knight of Cups.

Typically, this knight is a Prince Charming type, all about emotions and love. This is how Charlie sees himself—heroic, self-sacrificing, romantic. There’s a hint of that in this card, but in this deck, the knight is astride a blue dragon in a green field with a castle—home?—in the background.

The dragon is looking at a very narrow stream that it could step over easily but does not.  The knight carries the weight of a black raven on his head, and a cup of water in one hand, careful not to spill.

At first glance, these two knights appear to be very different and in different seasons, but the undercurrent of caution and hesitancy is similar. The previous knight was moving forward but cautiously, but here, the knight is at a full stop. Will he stay on the dragon?  Empty his full cup (love)? Or refill it with fresh water?
