Novel Tarot: Too Near the Edge (Chapter 1)

I love beautiful tarot and oracle cards, so for each chapter of each novel I write, I draw a card from one of my decks and read it intuitively. See the bottom of the page for information about the novel.

The Fool Card - Rider-Waite Tarot Deck

The card I’ve drawn is The Fool from the well-known Rider-Waite deck. This Major Arcana card shows a young man carrying a package on a journey and walking along the edge of a cliff. This is obviously representative of Lilah, who is literally walking the cliff’s edge on the Irish island of Howth on her latest “warrior librarian” assignment to recover an ancient and dangerous book.

Figuratively, she’s also close to the edge—her rocky new relationship with Charlie could be what pushes her over—even though everything seems sunny and carefree to the onlooker.

But the card could also represent Charlie, who is closer to danger than he realizes. One misstep could send them both to their doom.

I’m drawn to the white flower the character on the card carries. The Fool card is often read as the beginning of a journey, and for Lilah, this trip to Ireland to retrieve an artifact and have it authenticated by the Last Priest of a dead god will mark the beginning of her blossoming friendship with Raven.
